Unlike major companies like Chromecast or Plex, Kodi is managed by the non-profit XBMC Foundation, and it is constantly being modified and upgraded by developers around the world. Moreover, unlike other TV streamers such as the Apple TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV Stick, Kodi is not held back by licensing or by an app store, so it lets end users to download apps or addons to watch or listen whatever.

Its most important features are:

- In terms of Music, Kodi can play a slew of formats, including AAC, MP3, and OGG. It also comes with smart playlists and the ability to tag different tracks.

- In terms of pictures, Kodi allows to import images into a library and start a slideshow.

One of the most important Kodi features is the Add-ons, which are designed to enhance the overall experience of using the service. Its add-ons run the a lot of features, from simple screensavers and weather apps to tools that let you enhance program-viewing experience. There are add-ons that include several channels. There are also apps to stream podcasts as well as programs that will display lyrics with each song you play. You can even keep track of what is happening on social media with a Twitter Feed add-on.

Note that the add-ons are designed by independent developers who have nothing to do with the XBMC Foundation. So it is the end user responsibility to ensure the app is really legitimate and works as expected. Kodi is legal. In fact, Kodi is a blank canvas, offered as-is, allowing users to do what they want. It is the user’s responsibility to comply with all applicable laws in their country in regard to use.
