Bocker

DESCRIPTION

Bocker is a minimal re-implementation of Docker written in about 100 lines of Bash script. Its goal is educational and experimental: to show how container primitives might be orchestrated with shell, cgroups, network namespaces, and filesystem layers. It provides some subset of Docker’s functionality: pulling images, running containers, listing images and containers, executing inside containers, etc. It is not fully feature-complete: parts of functionality like data volumes and port forwarding are not yet implemented. Bocker requires a Linux environment with specific kernel features and system tools, plus root privileges, to manipulate namespaces, networks, filesystems.

Features

  • Implements core container operations: pull, run, images, ps, exec, logs, rm/rmi, commit etc.
  • Uses bash and standard system tools (btrfs, iptables, iproute2, cgroups) to manage containers’ isolation and resource limits
  • Supports networking via setting up bridge interface and routing/iptables rules for forwarding between container networks and host network
  • Allows quotas / resource control via cgroups
  • Image layer storage using btrfs filesystem under /var/bocker
  • Simple in structure & code, good reference/learning tool for how container system can be built minimally

Programming Language

Unix Shell
