Setting File Mode With The GUI

Now that we have seen how the permissions on files and directories are set, we can better


understand the permission dialogs in the GUI. In both Nautilus (GNOME) and Kon- queror (KDE), right-clicking a file or directory icon will expose a properties dialog. Here is an example from KDE 3.5:

Here we can see the settings for the owner, group, and world. In KDE, clicking the “Ad- vanced Permissions” button brings up another dialog that allows you to set each of the mode attributes individually. Another victory for understanding brought to us by the com- mand line!
